The program seeks applications for collaborative, community-based research that will foster better understanding of how ecosystems support human health and well-being. Specifically, this research should examine how communities can integrate ecosystem services with human health and well-being to inform their decision making and management practices. The ultimate goal is to help communities achieve their own objectives. Public nonprofit institutions/organizations (includes public institutions of higher education and hospitals) and private nonprofit institutions/organizations (includes private institutions of higher education and hospitals) located in the U.S., state and local governments, Federally Recognized Indian Tribal Governments, and U.S. territories or possessions are eligible to apply. Award Ceiling: $600,000

U.S. Soccer Foundation Safe Places to Play Grants
The foundation is accepting Letters of Inquiry for the 2016 summer grant cycle to provide grants to organizations to help them build or enhance a field space in an underserved community. Grants of up to $25,000 (for single-field projects) and $50,000 (multi-field projects) will be awarded in four categories: synthetic turf, lighting, irrigation, and sport court. To be eligible, applicants be a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, school, municipality, college or university, or sovereign tribal nation. LOIs must be received no later than May 27, 2016. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application by June 3, 2016.

National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) Everyday Capacity Building Grants
Every Day Grants will strengthen the stewardship of public lands by supporting public land groups with funding for organizational capacity building and for events to engage their local communities on the lands for education, recreation or volunteering. Everyday Capacity Building Grants seek to strengthen organizations and unleash their potential to serve their public lands. Awards can be used for strategic planning, marketing and communications, leadership capacity (board or executive), improved fundraising, assessments, and staff training. Applications will be accepted from Friends Groups, Cooperating Associations, Land Trusts, or any other 501(c)(3) nonprofits, whose mission is focused on serving a public land site in the United States and the improvement and responsible use of that site. Award Ceiling: $5,000. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but reviewed twice a year.

U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) BJA Violent Gang And Gun Crime Reduction Program (PSN)
PSN is designed to create safer neighborhoods through a sustained reduction in crime associated with gang and gun violence. The program’s effectiveness is based on the cooperation of local, state, and federal agencies engaged in a unified approach led by the U.S. Attorney (USA) in each district. Through the PSN task force, the USA will implement the five design features of PSN (partnerships, strategic planning, training, outreach, and accountability) to address specific gun and gang crime problems in that district. Eligible applicants are PSN Task Force fiscal agents for the U.S. Attorney districts and federally recognized Indian tribal governments as determined by the Secretary of the Interior. All fiscal agents must be certified by the relevant U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO). Eligible fiscal agents include states, units of local government, educational institutions, faith-based and other community organizations, private nonprofit organizations, and federally recognized Indian tribal governments as determined by the Secretary of the Interior. Award Ceiling: $500,000.

Mary Kay Foundation Domestic Violence Shelter Grant
This Foundation makes grants to worthwhile organizations that aid survivors of domestic violence by operating emergency shelters. Only applicants operating an emergency shelter (immediate overnight housing) for survivors of domestic violence are eligible to apply. Award Ceiling: $20,000.

Grant of the Week – February 1, 2016
Our First Steps Grant Program is designed to help small, local organizations get a firm basis for future sustainability or to help expand or perpetuate an organization’s ability to perform its mission. The Foundation provides grants of up to $2500 that come within the following guidelines and criteria:
- Support for a program in the early stages of development that is moving towards sustainability
- Support for a specific one-time need that will provide a long-term benefit (such as to help purchase a piece of equipment or to make an improvement to a facility)
- Support for educational initiatives that will provide a long-term benefit or help an organization achieve sustainability
- Support for unusual or imaginative new initiatives that are designed to provide long-term benefits or advancements toward protecting animals and their habitats.

Grant of the Week – January 25, 2016
Donaghue Foundation Another Look: Better Health for Elders in Care Facilities
The foundation will award grants totaling $750,000 to up to six projects to address a particular problem affecting the elderly in care facilities. Researchers applying for this grant must identify a stakeholder in the care delivery or policy arena with whom they will either consult or collaborate and who is willing to work with the researcher to develop a research product that may be readily used to improve care or quality of life. This program is open to investigators at tax-exempt research institutions in the United States. Letters of Intent must be received no later than February 29, 2016. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal by April 25, 2016.

The Children’s Trust Small Community-Based Organizations
This competitive solicitation seeks to fund up to 15 small community-based organizations (agencies) to participate in an intensive, two-year capacity-building initiative entitled Small Community-Based Organization Program and Professional Development Initiative (Small CBO PPD Initiative). The overall goals for the Initiative is to support agencies in their efforts to: Deliver high quality evidence-based services with fidelity; Practice strong administrative and fiscal management; and Engage in continuous learning and quality improvement; Foster financial sustainability, including revenue from diverse sources; and Advance parent and community engagement, as well as resident advocacy. Award Ceiling: up to $20,000.00, $35,000.00 or $50,000.00 annually, depending on the size of the total agency budget. The Bidders’ Conference and Application Training will take place on January 25, 2016. Pre-applications are required.

PeopleForBikes (PFB) Community Grant
The PeopleForBikes Community Grant Program supports bicycle infrastructure projects and targeted advocacy initiatives that make it easier and safer for people of all ages and abilities to ride. PeopleForBikes accepts grant applications from U.S. non-profit organizations with a focus on bicycling, active transportation, or community development, from city or county agencies or departments, and from state or federal agencies working locally. Award Ceiling: $10,000.

Grant of the Week – January 4, 2016
American Hiking Society (AHS) National Trails Fund Grant
Awards will fund projects that have hikers as the primary constituency; projects that secure trail lands, including acquisition of trails and trail corridors and the costs associated with acquiring conservation easements; projects that will result in visible and substantial ease of access, improved hiker safety, and/or avoidance of environmental damage; and projects that promote constituency-building surrounding specific trail projects, including volunteer recruitment and support. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be a nonprofit 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and be a member of American Hiking’s Alliance of Hiking Organizations. Award Ceiling: $5,000.

Grant of the Week – December 28, 2015
Open Meadows Foundation Small Organization Grants
This foundation seeks projects that promote gender/racial/economic justice. The projects must be led by and benefit women and girls, particularly those from vulnerable communities. Grants projects should be designed and implemented by women and girls, reflect the diversity of the community served, promote building community power, promote racial, social, economic and environmental justice, and have limited financial access, or have encountered obstacles in their search for funding. Proposals are accepted twice a year, on February 15th and August 15th of each year. Small and start-up organizations with an organizational budget less than $150,000 are strongly encouraged to apply. Award Ceiling: $2,000.

Dollar General Literacy Foundation Adult Literacy Grants
This annual award funds nonprofit organizations that provide direct service to adults in need of literacy assistance. Organizations must provide help in one of the following instructional areas: adult basic education, general education diploma (GED) preparation, or English language acquisition. Applications will only be accepted from eligible 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations and/or educational institutions (K-12 private and public schools, and colleges and universities) and/or public libraries. All applicants must be located in and provide direct services in a state in which Dollar General operates, and must be located within twenty miles of a Dollar General store. Award Ceiling: $15,000.

American Honda Foundation Grants
This foundation is supporting broad, innovative and forward-thinking projects that meet the needs of youth, especially minority students. The Foundation is awarding grants for projects that emphasize youth education, specifically in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), the environment, job training, and literacy. Eligible Organizations are nonprofit charitable organizations with 501(c) (3) status or a public school district, and private/public elementary and secondary schools as listed by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Quarterly deadlines: February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1. Award Ceiling: $75,000 over a one-year period.

Grant Writing Tip
Successful Proposals:
• Excite the reviewers
• Are easy to read and understand
• Have clear rationale & objectives that fit program priorities
• Clearly stated hypotheses or research questions – for research proposals
• Clearly stated learning objectives and expected outcomes/impacts of the project (What will be different as a result of the proposed work?)
These seem like common sense, but remembering to follow these will help to keep you on track.

The Children’s Trust Reading Enhancement Services
The Children’s Trust invites experienced agencies to submit proposals to deliver reading enhancement services at existing summer camps and after-school programs. This includes engaging parents; administering summer reading assessments; and tutoring struggling readers in small group settings the summer prior to their entering K, first and second grades. The selected applicant will also provide staff at after-school programs funded by The Trust with on-site coaching to implement high quality, differentiated literacy instruction.

National Education Association (NEA) Foundation Learning and Leadership Grants
Funding is available in two categories: (1) individual grants to fund participation in high-quality professional development experiences such as summer institutes or action research, and (2) group grants to fund collegial study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, or mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. All professional development must improve practice, curriculum, and student achievement. Applications are reviewed three times per year, every year. Applicants must be practicing U.S. public school teachers in grades Pre-K through 12, or public school education support professionals, or faculty and staff at public higher education institutions. Preference will be given to members of the National Education Association. Award Ceiling: $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups.

Trends in the Grant Universe
- 90% of the foundations in the study do not provide multi-year grants.
- Of the foundations that do make multi-year grants, those grants total 75% of the amounts granted.
- The accelerated decline in multi-year grants seems to be due to the drop in foundation assets that began with the 2008 recession and the subsequent economic uncertainty.
Grant of the Week – November 16, 2015
Home Depot Foundation Veteran Housing Grants Program
The Foundation awards grants to nonprofit organizations for the development and repair of veterans housing. Eligible Projects include: new construction, rehab or repair, single family or multifamily, permanent supportive housing or transitional housing. Grants are awarded solely for the physical construction or repair of housing for veterans (hard costs). THDF does not provide funding for soft costs, such as furnishings, rental subsidies, tenant services, etc. 75% of the project’s funding sources have been identified at the time of proposal submission. The amount of funding requested does not exceed $25,000 per veteran unit. For multifamily rental projects, proposals requesting above $100,000 must provide evidence of a third party binding agreement that ensures the units are a.) reserved for veterans; b.) occupied by veterans for a minimum of 15 years for rental or 3 years for homeownership ( i.e. project-based HUDVASH, other funder requirement, deed restriction, zoning requirement, etc.). Next Deadlines: February 24, 2016 and June 23, 2016.
